What is Sciatica?
The Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body. It originates in the low back traveling through the buttock and down the back of the leg into the foot providing motor control and sensation to many of the muscles and tissues along its path.
What causes Sciatica?
Great Quesiton!
There are several factors that cause sciatic symptoms. These can include (but not limited to) -
bulging discs, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, abnormal range of motion of the spine and surrounding muscles, osteoarthritis and piriformis syndrome.
Often, symptoms can occur due to an accumulation of these factors, especially if they have been ongoing for an extended period of time.
Sensations such as numbness, tingling, increased pain with long periods of standing, sitting or bending forward, and even weakness in the glutes/legs/feet might occur as the nerve becomes irritated along its path. Sometimes coughing, sneezing and straining might worsen these symptoms as well.
How can chiropractic care help?
Great Question!
As we approach this topic carefully, Doctors of Chiropractic will perform a thorough examination to pinpoint the underlying cause of the symptoms you are experiencing. Imaging and co-management with a medical doctor might also be recommended. Sharing detailed information about your symptoms will help your chiropractor gain a comprehensive understanding of your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan.
A key aspect of treatment often involves improving range of motion, reducing muscle tension, and strengthening key muscle groups through therapeutic exercises. These strategies can significantly alleviate many symptoms and promote overall well-being.
